Meditation Group

All Saints’ Meditation Group is meeting every second Sunday in the Upper Room at 7:15pm for about an hour.  On Sundays where there is a Choral Evensong the time is 15 minutes later at 7:30pm.

In meditation we are following the tradition of the Benedictine Monk, John Main, who founded the World Community for Christian Meditation.

The normal pattern begins with an informal chat about the last few days’ events.  We are then following a series of meditation talks by Laurence Freeman, who now directs the World Community for Christian Meditation.  This is followed by 20 or 25 minutes of silent mediation, and the session finishes with music which has included pieces by Duruflé, Tavener, Rutter, Tallis, Avro Pärt and Vaughan Williams.

On two occasions we have used paintings,  Caravaggio’s The calling of St Matthew and Rembrandt’s The Return of the Prodigal Son, as the focus of the mediation.  We are very open to any other ideas people would like to try in meditation.

If you want to find out more about these techniques of contemplative prayer, one source is John Main’s book Word into Silence and I can lend you a copy.  Why not come and join us?

There are some Youtube talks on the practice of Christian meditation available from this link; ‘Talks by Lawrence Freeman’ of the World Community of Christian Meditation.
