The Grass-Cutting Team (The Mowers)

All Saints’ is set in very attractive grassed surroundings which are attached to a ‘field’ which is used for all manner of Church activities such as youth groups’ games, BBQs, fetes and wedding photographs.

Apart from during winter months, to keep these facilities in good condition, about three to four Mowers meet on a dry weekday evening, every two weeks or so and take on various tasks such as mowing, strimming, lopping and digging.  They usually spend about an hour on the various tasks of the moment, coordinated by David Jowett.

Three petrol mowers reside on site and these are supplemented by additional mowers, strimmers, loppers and other tools of our own as required.

At around 7:00pm on the chosen evening, having discarded their office suits, the Mowers emerge wearing well-worn garden clothes and overalls.  Soon the air is filled with the sound of coughing mowers and petrol fumes.  Then the familiar wurring from these machines is heard as they are marched up and down by the Mowers old and young who benefit from the evening exercise.

The Grass-cutting Team comprises people from the Church with a variety of backgrounds.  The common feature is that they are happy to help, don’t mind a bit of dust and noise and have a ‘muck in’ attitude.  The rewards are the satisfaction of seeing a job well done, fresh air and sometimes a bit of ‘craic’ with the lads in “The County” afterwards.

The Mowers invite new members to join their jolly team. The contact person is David Jowett on 0191 285 7776, email davidjowett@blueyonder.co.uk.  Alternatively, Tim Watkinson can provide any necessary information.
