The Garden of Eden
Across the far end of the Church Green, along the boundary with Newcastle School for Boys, the beginnings of a raised bed has been formed for the ‘Garden of Eden’. The raised sides are completed and a weed suppressant membrane has been put down over the grass with a mulch over the top. Then come the spring we can start planting.
The planting will be based on two fruit trees for ‘knowledge’ and ‘life’. With this would go any biblically referenced plants that we can grow. We are also thinking of things that can be eaten and use for decoration. A bramble would go with an apple tree for blackberry and apple pie but would also make a crown of thorns. Similarly a Rambling Rector Rose would also make a crown. Holly and Ivy can be used for Christmas decoration. We could use ideas from a monastic garden, part physic, part kitchen. Think cumin, fennel, comfrey, feverfew; think borage, nettle, rocket, endive, wormwood.
